At its initial launch, AutoCAD allowed users to create drawings using a right-click and the drawing tools available in the main menu. In 1982, AutoCAD was only available on computers with the View Master II graphics adapter. Version 1.0 was released in December 1982 and included the following features:

Log on to Autodesk Autocad and go to Modeling.
Under Define, choose Advanced Definitions, Custom Definitions, and see if it's listed as an option.

If it is, click on Edit Custom Definitions.

This will allow you to edit the definition of your custom point and then return to the Modeling menu, close it, and click Save.

Click Save.

I won’t get into all the new features here as there are plenty of blog articles and YouTube videos that will give you more details. I do want to give you a brief overview of the changes that you’ll notice immediately, and over the coming months as you get more familiar with them.


This is the biggest change to AutoCAD that has happened in the last decade. When I say “biggest change”, I mean it. Undo, which previously you could call “Redo” in earlier versions, now includes undo support for everything. That means you can undo commands and objects, attributes, text styles, blocks, tag lists, and complex relationships. You can also completely undo whole drawing scenes.

If you are accustomed to any of the previous versions of AutoCAD, you might not think this is a big deal, but this is what we are aiming to achieve with the new undo – to remove all the complexity of previous versions and leave you with the simple and intuitive undos we all want. For example, in AutoCAD 2016, a major command you could undo would be: Draw a line, press A, press R, press X, press Y and press Enter.
